Percentages

Q1. A class of 28 students sat a test and 21 of them passed. What percentage of the class passed?

  1. A 68%
  2. B 72%
  3. C 75%
  4. D 78%
Show answer

Answer: C — 75%

21 out of 28 is 21 ÷ 28 = 0.75, which is 75%.

Proportional reasoning

Q2. A recipe for 24 biscuits uses 300 g of flour. Keeping the same proportions, how much flour is needed to make 36 biscuits?

  1. A 400 g
  2. B 420 g
  3. C 450 g
  4. D 480 g
Show answer

Answer: C — 450 g

Flour per biscuit is 300 ÷ 24 = 12.5 g. For 36 biscuits: 12.5 × 36 = 450 g.

Mean (average)

Q3. A student scored 12, 15, 9, 14 and 15 on five short quizzes. What is the mean score?

  1. A 12
  2. B 13
  3. C 14
  4. D 15
Show answer

Answer: B — 13

The total is 12 + 15 + 9 + 14 + 15 = 65. The mean is 65 ÷ 5 = 13.

Area and fractions

Q4. A rectangular classroom is 8 m long and 6 m wide. A rug covers exactly one quarter of the floor. What area does the rug cover?

  1. A 6 m²
  2. B 12 m²
  3. C 18 m²
  4. D 24 m²
Show answer

Answer: B — 12 m²

The floor area is 8 × 6 = 48 m². One quarter of 48 is 48 ÷ 4 = 12 m².

Rates and time

Q5. A teacher marks 5 essays in 40 minutes at a steady rate. At the same rate, how long will it take to mark 18 essays?

  1. A 2 h 10 min
  2. B 2 h 24 min
  3. C 2 h 40 min
  4. D 3 h
Show answer

Answer: B — 2 h 24 min

Each essay takes 40 ÷ 5 = 8 minutes. For 18 essays: 8 × 18 = 144 minutes, which is 2 hours 24 minutes.

Ratio

Q6. In a school the ratio of students to teachers is 15 to 1. If there are 420 students, how many teachers are there?

  1. A 24
  2. B 28
  3. C 30
  4. D 32
Show answer

Answer: B — 28

Divide the students by 15: 420 ÷ 15 = 28 teachers.

Read the passage, then answer Q7–Q9

Retrieval practice, the act of recalling information from memory rather than simply re-reading it, is one of the most reliable ways to strengthen long-term learning. When students are asked to bring information to mind, the effort of retrieval consolidates the memory and makes it easier to access later. Re-reading, by contrast, can create a false sense of fluency: the material feels familiar, but that familiarity is not the same as being able to recall it under exam conditions. Short, low-stakes quizzes are a practical way to build retrieval practice into everyday teaching.

Reading comprehension · main idea

Q7. Which statement best captures the main idea of the passage above?

  1. A Re-reading is the most effective way to study for an exam.
  2. B Retrieval practice strengthens learning more reliably than re-reading.
  3. C Familiarity with material guarantees success under exam conditions.
  4. D Quizzes are only useful when they carry high stakes.
Show answer

Answer: B — Retrieval practice strengthens learning more reliably than re-reading.

The passage argues that recalling information (retrieval practice) consolidates memory more reliably than re-reading, which only feels familiar.

Reading comprehension · inference

Q8. In the passage, 'a false sense of fluency' suggests that re-reading can make students:

  1. A recall information more accurately under pressure
  2. B believe they know the material better than they actually do
  3. C enjoy their studying a great deal more
  4. D forget the material almost immediately
Show answer

Answer: B — believe they know the material better than they actually do

A 'false sense of fluency' means the material feels known, but that feeling overstates how well it can actually be recalled.

Reading comprehension · author purpose

Q9. The author's main purpose in the passage is to:

  1. A argue that quizzes should replace all other teaching
  2. B criticise students who choose to re-read their notes
  3. C explain why retrieval practice supports learning and suggest a classroom use
  4. D compare two unrelated approaches to classroom management
Show answer

Answer: C — explain why retrieval practice supports learning and suggest a classroom use

The passage explains the benefit of retrieval practice and ends by suggesting a practical classroom application (low-stakes quizzes).

Technical writing · modifiers

Q10. Which sentence is written most clearly and correctly?

  1. A Walking into the classroom, the whiteboard was covered in notes.
  2. B Walking into the classroom, the teacher saw that the whiteboard was covered in notes.
  3. C The whiteboard, walking into the classroom, was covered in notes.
  4. D Covered in notes, the teacher saw the whiteboard while walking in.
Show answer

Answer: B — Walking into the classroom, the teacher saw that the whiteboard was covered in notes.

The opening phrase 'Walking into the classroom' must describe the person doing the walking. Only option B places 'the teacher' correctly after it, avoiding a dangling modifier.

Technical writing · concision

Q11. Which sentence expresses the idea most concisely without losing its meaning?

  1. A Due to the fact that the test was difficult, many students required additional time in order to finish it.
  2. B Because the test was difficult, many students needed extra time to finish.
  3. C The test being difficult in nature, additional time was a thing many students needed.
  4. D On account of its difficulty, extra time for finishing was needed by many of the students.
Show answer

Answer: B — Because the test was difficult, many students needed extra time to finish.

Option B keeps the full meaning while removing wordy phrases like 'due to the fact that' and 'in order to'.
