Shenton College Deaf Education Centre (SCDEC) is a unique secondary environment that provides targeted and highly specialised support for Deaf and hard of hearing students within the auspices of the mainstream Shenton College. As a “school within a school”, staff work in partnership with Shenton College to provide accessible and highly individualised pathways for students. At every opportunity, students are empowered to make choices that challenge them to achieve their personal best and contribute to a stronger sense of wellbeing. Staff strive to create a culturally and linguistically responsive and safe learning environment through authentic relational practices and a focus on the whole child. Staff proactively engage students and families in collaborative, student‑centred decision‑making to co‑design purposeful learning plans that support individual needs, academic aspirations, and maximise post-school pathways.
SCDEC enrols approximately 40 students from Years 7–12 who have a severe to profound bilateral hearing loss. Students may choose Auslan and/or spoken English as their preferred language to access the curriculum and for social interactions, with many learning English as an additional language through written English. Students may choose to use a range of assistive listening devices to aid auditory access and are provided support to do so.
