Role description
HEAD OF YEAR
Position Details
The Head of Year is a key middle leadership role at Mercedes College, responsible for overseeing student wellbeing and therefore holistic student progress within a designated year level. Reporting through the Dean of Students to the Vice Principal, the Head of Year collaborates to develop and track student metrics for success, and implements procedures and a pastoral care program to support student flourishing and a positive and nurturing school environment. The Head of Year is the key contact for families, after escalation through the teacher and Head of Learning, for all issues that impact the students’ daily experience within the Year Group.
In this role, the Head of Year works closely with Homeroom Teachers, Pastoral Care Team, including Mental Health Professionals, Student Services and Wellness, Heads of Learning and Middle and Senior Leaders to ensure effective student care and holistic support. They coordinate year-specific activities, build strong relationships with students and their families, and contribute to the development of a respectful and cohesive learning culture.
The position requires a commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and respect within the school community. The Head of Year is expected to model exemplary leadership, demonstrating dedication to the College’s mission and educational philosophy. This includes promoting student engagement, supporting their academic, social, spiritual and emotional growth, and driving initiatives which will enhance their overall flourishing.
