To teach in any Tasmanian school — government, Catholic, or independent — you must be registered with the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania (TRB). Unlike some other states, there is no sector exemption: every classroom teacher in Tasmania needs registration or a Limited Authority to Teach. This guide walks through every step, from getting your Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) first, to applying online, progressing from Provisional to Full registration, and what interstate teachers need to know about Tasmania's mutual recognition process.

1. Who needs to register?

All teachers working in Tasmanian schools and colleges must hold either teacher registration or a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT). This applies across all sectors — Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) schools, Catholic schools, and independent schools all operate under the same requirement. There is no independent-school exemption in Tasmania, unlike some other states.

Early childhood teachers: Teachers whose qualifications cover only the 0–5 age range are currently ineligible for TRB registration. If your degree covers school-age children (Kindergarten through Year 12), you are eligible. Check trb.tas.gov.au/types-of-registration/ for the current position.

As at 30 June 2025, there are 11,841 registered teachers in Tasmania. The TRB can be contacted at trb@trb.tas.gov.au or (03) 6165 5977, Monday to Friday.

2. Types of registration

The TRB determines your registration category based on your qualifications and application — you do not nominate it yourself. Most new graduates are granted Provisional registration and progress to Full once they meet the requirements covered in Section 6.

Type Who it's for Registration period
Full Fully qualified teachers who have demonstrated the Proficient APST standard 5-year cycle; annual fee required
Provisional Graduates with a completed ITE degree who have not yet demonstrated the Proficient APST standard Until P2F completed; annual fee required
Specialist VET Vocational education and training specialists delivering VET-in-schools programs 5-year cycle; annual fee required

3. Eligibility requirements

Before applying, you must meet four conditions.

Qualifications

You must hold an accredited initial teacher education (ITE) course equivalent to at least four years of full-time tertiary study.

RWVP

You must hold a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People before your application can be finalised. Interstate RWVP registrations are not accepted. See Section 4 — get this first, as it takes up to six weeks.

Character and fitness

The TRB requires a National Police History Check, which it processes during your application. You do not need to arrange this separately.

English language proficiency

You automatically satisfy this if you completed four or more years of higher education in Australia, Ireland, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, or the United States.

Otherwise, you need an IELTS Academic result of at least 7.5 average, with a minimum of 8 in speaking and listening, and no band below 7. Results must be within two years of your application date.

Verify before applying. English proficiency requirements can change. Always check trb.tas.gov.au/joining-the-profession/ for current thresholds before submitting.

4. Step 1 — Get your Tasmanian RWVP (allow up to 6 weeks)

The RWVP is administered by the Tasmanian Department of Justice — it is completely separate from teacher registration. Because it takes up to six weeks to process, it should be your first step, well before you apply for registration.

1

Apply online

Complete the application at service.tas.gov.au (approximately 30 minutes).

2

Visit a Service Tasmania centre

Within 21 days of applying online, visit in person to provide three identity documents and have your photo taken. Bring: one commencement document (e.g. birth certificate or passport), one primary use document (e.g. driver's licence), and one secondary use document (e.g. Medicare card or student ID).

3

Pay the fee and wait

Fee: $133.70 for employment purposes (Source: service.tas.gov.au, January 2026). Volunteers pay nothing under a fee relief scheme from 1 January 2026. Processing takes up to six weeks.

You can renew your RWVP up to three months before it expires. The TRB automatically validates your RWVP status — a lapsed RWVP will stall your teacher registration application.

5. Step 2 — Apply for teacher registration

Once you have your RWVP, apply via TRB Online at trbonline.trb.tas.gov.au.

1

Create your account

Select 'Sign Up' and receive login details by email.

2

Complete the application

Log in and fill out the form (approximately 30 minutes).

3

Upload your documents

Identity evidence (including name-change documentation if applicable); qualifications via My eQuals (academic transcripts, testamur, and Australian Higher Education Graduate Statement); your RWVP number and expiry date; English proficiency evidence if required.

4

Pay the fee

See the fee table below. Application and assessment fees are non-refundable.

When to apply

Applications open from 1 September each year for the following calendar year. If you plan to start teaching at the beginning of a school year, apply from 1 December the year before.

For an immediate start, budget at least four weeks: the National Police History Check takes 10–21 days to return for 40% of applicants, and some take longer.

Fees (2026)

All fees are exempt from GST. Verify current amounts at trb.tas.gov.au/fees-and-payments/ before applying — fees are reviewed annually.

Item Fee
Application / assessment fee (once-off per cycle) $63.43
Annual registration fee $118.23
2-year registration $236.46
3-year registration $354.69
5-year registration $591.15
P2F category change $63.43
Professional standing letter $41.89
Overseas qualifications assessment $132.65
HALT certification / renewal Currently waived

You can pay up to five years in advance via TRB Online. The combined cost of applying and registering for one year (application fee + annual fee) is approximately $181.66.

6. Progressing from Provisional to Full registration

Most new graduates start on Provisional registration. To move to Full registration, you complete the Provisional to Full (P2F) process, which demonstrates you have reached the Proficient standard of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST).

Requirements to begin P2F

  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency
  • 185 teaching days completed as a provisionally registered teacher
  • Currently teaching in a Tasmanian school
  • Principal support (in writing)

The P2F Inquiry

Tasmania uses the 2026 P2F Inquiry template — the TRB confirmed no further changes to the process in 2026. The inquiry must be completed within the same academic year it is commenced and includes:

Inquiry Plan

A structured plan submitted at the start of the inquiry process, outlining the focus area and evidence to be gathered.

Workplace Review Report

A formal report documenting your professional practice against the Proficient APST standard.

Classroom Observation

A formal observation using the P2F Classroom Observation Template, conducted by your mentor or workplace reviewer.

Mentor involvement

A mentor and workplace reviewer provide guidance and contribute to the inquiry documentation.

Support available. The TRB runs online information sessions for teachers, mentors, and workplace reviewers throughout the year. Fee for registration category change: $63.43. Questions: prof.standards@trb.tas.gov.au

7. Keeping your registration current

Your registration runs on a five-year cycle from your initial registration date. Within that cycle, you pay an annual fee each year to maintain active registration.

31 December deadline. If the annual fee ($118.23) is not paid by 31 December, your registration automatically lapses. A lapsed registration means reapplying from scratch — including a new National Police History Check that can take up to four weeks. You cannot teach while unregistered. Set a calendar reminder for 1 December each year.

Renewal requirements at five-year cycle end

To renew Full registration you must demonstrate one of the following:

  • 120 full-time equivalent (FTE) teaching days in the past five years, or
  • Approximately 20 hours per year of relevant professional development activities

8. Early registration for final-year students

If you are finishing your degree in December, you do not have to wait until graduation. The TRB offers early registration for students who have completed all course requirements but have not yet graduated.

1

Apply from 1 September

Apply via TRB Online, designating the following calendar year as your start date. Check trb.tas.gov.au from August for the exact opening date — applications typically go live on 1 September.

2

Apply at least 10 days early

Submit at least 10 days before completing your final unit or professional experience placement.

3

Documents at application

Submit your unofficial academic record and a written completion confirmation from your university.

4

Submit your testamur within year 1

Once you graduate, provide your degree certificate (testamur) and official academic transcript within your first year of registration.

Processing takes approximately 10 days for most applicants. Registering before January puts you in the market for term 1 positions ahead of graduates who wait until after their ceremony.

9. Interstate and New Zealand teachers

If you hold current teacher registration in another Australian state or territory, or in New Zealand, you can apply for Tasmanian registration under mutual recognition.

Tasmania is exempt from Automatic Deemed Registration until 1 July 2027. This means you cannot simply notify Tasmania and start teaching — you must apply via TRB Online and wait for formal approval. After 1 July 2027, ADR is expected to apply to teachers; check the current position before assuming either way.

Recognised jurisdictions

NSW (NESA), VIC (VIT), QLD (QCT), WA (TRBWA), SA (TRBSA), ACT (TQI), NT (TRBN), and New Zealand (Education Council Aotearoa NZ).

Limitations: VIT's early childhood teacher category is not recognised in Tasmania. NESA accreditation for birth-to-five or preschool does not permit school-sector teaching in Tasmania — this affects NSW early childhood teachers who hold NESA Conditional accreditation only.

The application process

1

Get a Tasmanian RWVP first

Interstate RWVP is not accepted. Allow up to six weeks (see Section 4).

2

Apply via TRB Online

Use the mutual recognition pathway and complete the online application.

3

Deemed registration

Granted within 2–7 working days of completing the application and identity verification. You can commence teaching on this basis.

4

Substantive registration

Generally granted within one month of deemed registration. Your home-state registration must remain current until this is confirmed.

Best time to apply: from 1 December the year before you plan to start teaching in Tasmania. This gives enough lead time for the RWVP (6 weeks), the TRB application (4 weeks), and any delays.

10. Limited Authority to Teach (LAT)

A LAT is a temporary teaching authority granted when a school cannot find a registered teacher. It is not a pathway to registration and should not be confused with it.

Key facts about LATs

Who applies The school or employer applies on your behalf via TRB Online — you cannot self-nominate.
When you can start You cannot commence teaching until TRB formally approves the LAT.
From Dec 2025 Generic Relief LATs are no longer available. School-specific relief LATs remain for eligible pre-service teachers; ITE students can get a LAT with a school-designated mentor.
Fee $181.66

If you are a final-year student, the early registration pathway in Section 8 is a better option than relying on a LAT. If you are moving from interstate, the mutual recognition process in Section 9 is the correct pathway.

? Frequently asked questions

How long does teacher registration take in Tasmania?

Most applications are finalised in approximately 10 business days once all documents are received and fees paid. The National Police History Check adds time — roughly 10–21 days for most applicants, and some take longer. Budget four weeks from a complete application submission to having your registration confirmed.

What is the difference between Provisional and Full registration?

Provisional registration is granted to graduates who have completed an accredited teaching degree but have not yet demonstrated the Proficient APST standard. Full registration requires demonstrating the Proficient standard through the P2F process after completing 185 teaching days in a Tasmanian school. Both allow you to work as a classroom teacher.

Can I transfer my teacher registration from another state to Tasmania?

Yes, through the mutual recognition process — but Tasmania is currently exempt from Automatic Deemed Registration until 1 July 2027. You must apply via TRB Online and wait for approval rather than simply notifying. Deemed registration (allowing you to start teaching) is granted within 2–7 working days. You also need a Tasmanian RWVP before applying.

Do I need to register with the TRB to teach in a Catholic or independent school?

Yes. Teacher registration is mandatory for all schools in Tasmania — government, Catholic, and independent. There is no sector exemption, unlike some other Australian states.

What happens if my teacher registration lapses?

If you do not pay the annual fee by 31 December, your registration automatically lapses. You must reapply from scratch, including a new National Police History Check that can take up to four weeks. You cannot teach while unregistered.

I am finishing my degree in December — can I get registered before graduation?

Yes. Apply via TRB Online from 1 September and submit your unofficial academic record along with a university completion confirmation. Your formal testamur and official transcript are due within your first year of registration. Most applications process in approximately 10 days.
