Education Assistant position
Majella Catholic Primary School, Balga, is a single-stream co-educational school (K–6) with approximately 250 students. Our community is culturally diverse, with over 80% of students from Language Backgrounds Other Than English (LBOTE). We are committed to inclusive education and trauma-informed practices to support student wellbeing and engagement.
The school operates an onsite Intensive English Centre (IEC). We are seeking a dedicated Education Assistant to:
• Work Monday to Thursday in a combined Year 3/4 IEC classroom, supporting EAL/D learners.
• Work Friday in a mainstream class supporting a student with additional needs.
• Support communication between students and teachers in the classroom.
• Assist EAL/D learners to access curriculum content and understand school routines and expectations.
• Work with individuals or small groups under teacher direction.
• Liaise with families to support student learning and wellbeing.
• Assist newly arrived families to settle into the school community.
• Support teachers in developing culturally responsive materials and practices.
• Assist with school activities and excursions as required.
Selection Criteria
1. Demonstrated experience supporting EAL/D learners in a classroom setting.
2. Ability to speak a language other than Standard Australian English relevant to the school community (desirable).
3. Understanding of culturally responsive practice and trauma-informed approaches.
4. Capacity to work collaboratively with teachers and contribute positively to a team.
5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills when engaging with families from diverse backgrounds.
6. Relevant Special Education Assistant qualifications (essential); TESOL qualification or experience (desirable).
