The Role

East Victoria Park ESC is seeking a dynamic and motivated Special Needs Education Assistant to join their welcoming team.

The successful applicant will assist teaching staff in the delivery and assessment of planned education programs. You will work under general supervision or autonomously and contribute advice and expertise, collaborating with school community members to support student achievement.

You should be committed to enhancing students’ learning opportunities through ongoing reflective classroom practice as well as plan and engage in professional learning opportunities which includes collaboration with colleagues. You should also contribute to and maintain a team environment.

Our school caters for 61 children from Kindergarten to Year 6 with cognitive, intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Applicants who have experience in working with students with special needs in a primary Education Support setting, as well as experience in working with children with Autism, Intellectual Disability, Physical Disability and complex behavioural needs will be highly regarded.

Familiarity with Augmentative Alternative Communication, Positive Behaviour Support, Berry Street Education Model Letters and Sounds and the Zones of Regulation Program is highly desirable.

    • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
    • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
    • Demonstrated ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
    • Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
    • Demonstrated ability to assist with the general health and well being of students.
