Selection Criteria
KSC 1 - Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge and understanding of nursing services in respect to child health and development including the appropriate qualifications, technical skills and expertise as relevant to the position.
KSC 2 - Demonstrated ability to effectively address the complex healthcare needs of students and provide a whole school approach to the maintenance of a healthy working and learning environment that is respectful, safe and supportive of students and the school community.
KSC 3 - Demonstrated high level of written and verbal communication skills and a high level of interpersonal skills, including the capacity to provide advice and support to students, staff and parents in respect to the work area.
KSC 4 - Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of anaphylaxis, allergies, asthma and diabetes.
KSC 5 - Demonstrated experience in the delivery and coordination of student and family health and wellbeing services in a school setting.
Role
Hours of work: 9:00am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday with an unpaid 30-minute lunchbreak.
The School Nurse acts as a first point of contact for all first aid enquiries. It is important that the successful applicant operates in a consistent, professional, courteous and efficient manner at all times. The role requires close interaction with a range of staff, students and visitors to the school.
A current relevant qualification is required, e.g. registration with the Australian Health Professionals Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse with experience.
Responsibilities
The First Aid Nurse is part of the Administration Community, whose responsibility is to work collaboratively, ensuring a productive, efficient and respectful workplace.
Responsibilities
- Provide primary nursing care to sick and injured students, staff and visitors and carry out general nursing procedures as required and in line with DE guidelines
- Ensure anaphylaxis, asthma, allergy, diabetes documentation and medications are up to date at all times
- Update and maintain a register of students with Management Plans re asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis
- Maintain the First Aid room in a clean, well-organised manner, and maintained in accordance with OH&S standards
- Maintain up to date notices, concerning DE health requirements eg. notifiable diseases, exclusions etc.
- Order medical supplies and keep an inventory of equipment and first aid supplies, liaising with suppliers when necessary
- Order, store, monitor and administer medication and medical supplies in accordance with DE regulations
- Contact parents and emergency services as required
- Liaise with parents and staff regarding any problems/queries about students' medical conditions
- Provide assistance to staff with the ongoing management of health-related issues
- Administer medication to students as required and record accurately as per DE requirements
- Ensure supplies are maintained at all times, including replenishing Yard Support care bags, first aid kits and excursion/camp first aid kits ensuring material and equipment are safe for use
- Prepare and maintain first aid kits for classrooms as well as performing head lice checks if required
- Maintain necessary medical records and incident forms and where required ensure their input into the school's management system in relation to first aid
- Print and update lists of students and their medical conditions
- Report to relevant Principal Class and relevant staff, any matters of concern regarding the wellbeing of students
- Coordinate the update and distribution of medical care forms/action plans as required, following up with parents/carers to ensure they are current and completed
- Provide education in relation to common health conditions (eg. anaphylaxis/allergy/asthma)
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
- Undertake other duties as relevant to the field of responsibility as requested by the Business Manager or Principal
- Communicate with Parents/Carers to ensure that all student medical information is correct and up to date
- Ensure First Aid Room is clean, well-organised and maintained in accordance to OH&S standards
- Implement emergency management procedures when necessary
- Contribute to development of school policies where applicable.
