The role of the Training Instructor is to lead the delivery of high-quality training and assessment (including competency-based training) to youth detention staff and contribute to the strategic and operational objectives of the youth detention centres.
You will work as part of a dynamic team to support the Senior Trainers to deliver high quality training and assessment (including competency-based training) and to undertake general administrative duties to support youth detention training. This position will play a critical role in the delivery of training to new and existing youth detention operational staff.

As a Training Instructor, you will specifically:
- Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Deliver use of force training (inclusive of verbal and non-verbal co-regulation techniques and physical skills) to youth detention operational staff as per the policy and approved training materials.
- Deliver other training to youth detention staff including induction and mandatory competency training as per the policy and approved training materials.
- Understand and apply youth detention trauma-informed and culturally competent practices and teach these principles throughout all training.
- Use a range of strategies to confirm participant understanding of key learning outcomes.
- As required, provide coaching and assistance to participants to support their completion of course requirements.
- Support the Senior Training Instructors to administer feedback and assessment, as per approved assessment tools.
- Participate in assessment validation, moderation and continuous improvement activities including successful completion of annual use of force instructor training.
- Understand, comply and contribute to risk assessment processes to ensure your personal safety and the safety of participants and other trainers.
- As required, communicate with other training team members and youth detention management about participant progress.
- Assist with general training coordination tasks to support the Senior Training Instructor and Training Coordinator.
- Ensure participant training records are maintained and other training-related administrative duties are completed.
- Provide input into curriculum reviews and updates.
- Develop effective working relationships with internal stakeholders to support training delivery and quality outcomes.
