Pre-service Teacher Program – Teach in Canberra

The ACT Education Directorate seeks passionate and aspiring fourth year undergraduate, and second year masters students, to apply for our Pre-service Teacher Program, securing your future as a new educator before you graduate.  

Our Permit to Teach Program is an employment-based pathway for students completing an initial teacher education (ITE) course. You’ll receive pay and conditions that are among the nation’s leading public school teacher salary packages and gain invaluable experience in an ACT public school.

Pre-service teachers from the following universities can commence teaching on a RestrictedPermit to Teach once minimum course requirements have been satisfied:

  • Swinburne University
  • University of Canberra
  • University of New England

All pre-service teachers from Australian universities can commence teaching on an Unrestricted Permit to Teach once course requirements are met. Ask your tertiary education provider for more information.

About the role:

As a teacher in an ACT public school, you will:

  • Inspire and teach students ranging from either early childhood, pre-school to year 6, years 7-10 in high school, years 11 – 12 in colleges or in larger P-10 schools.
  • Join a collaborative and supportive team focused on student wellbeing and achieving student learning outcomes.
  • Apply developing teaching strategies and curriculum knowledge, including the implementation of explicit teaching practices, to drive improved student outcomes.
  • Bring well-developed classroom management, communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and motivate students.
  • Support students’ diverse needs, creating an inclusive classroom where every student feels valued and supported.
  • Contribute to whole-school initiatives and foster relationships with students, colleagues and the wider school community.

What we’re looking for:

  • Combined early childhood and primary, or secondary teaching expertise: Developing curriculum knowledge and a proven focus on effective literacy and numeracy pedagogies.
  • Evidence of working towards completing an Initial Teacher Education qualification: Evidence of current course enrolment and practicum reports from a recognised tertiary teaching program.
  • Passion for teaching: A genuine desire to see students thrive and succeed in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Eligibility requirements:

To be able to apply for the Pre-Service Teacher Pathway Program:

  • Be in your fourth year of an undergraduate OR second year masters of an approved Initial Teacher Education course (https://www.aitsl.edu.au/deliver-ite-programs/apl)
  • Be an Australian citizen and/or be permanent resident and/or hold a valid student visa.
