Role description

Independent Schools NSW is the peak body supporting and representing Independent schools in NSW and provides a range of services across NSW and ACT.

The Governance Consultant (Fixed Term till end of 2029) provides expert advisory and consulting services to boards and school leaders across the Independent school sector in NSW. This role requires governance expertise, strong consulting acumen, and the ability to work confidently and credibly with senior stakeholders.

The Governance Consultant supports school boards to build capability, strengthen governance practice, and navigate complex or sensitive issues through tailored advice, professional learning, and governance reviews. The role contributes to advancing effective governance capability across the sector.

Key Accountabilities

1. Board Support and Advice
Provide high-quality advice to board chairs, principals, and school leaders on governance matters including board role clarity, policy interpretation and application, constitutions, and strategic governance practices.

2. Professional Learning
Design, develop, and deliver engaging professional learning programs and workshops for board members and school leaders, tailored to school context, stage of governance maturity, and current priorities. Deliver sessions both in person and online.

3. Board Reviews
Partner with Manager, Governance to facilitate confidential, chair-commissioned board reviews that assess performance, culture, and effectiveness. Facilitate reflective discussions and produce strategic, constructive review reports to support continuous improvement.
