Role description
Port Augusta Special School (PASpS) is a special school catering to students from years Reception to Year 12. Students at PASpS have a range of disabilities that impact on their learning; all have intellectual disabilities and some have physical disabilities. Some students have complex communication needs and are non-verbal. The successful applicant will be expected to use a range of communication systems, specifically, Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) so knowledge of and experience in using PODD communication books and Proloquo2Go are essential.
Teaching and learning is planned using ABLES and the Australian Curriculum for students in years R-10. Years 10-12 students undertake modified SACE programs. All students have One Plans incorporating individualised goals. The school uses ABLES SA to assess the students and support their individual learning plans. Knowledge of this would be desirable.
Experience in differentiating the curriculum for students with disabilities is essential. The teacher will be required to lead their teaching and learning team, including SSOs, therefore their ability to operate collaboratively within a team is essential. We have a whole-school, balanced literacy program using Emergent - Transitional - Conventional Literacy and synthetic phonics. Knowledge of and experience in teaching a balanced literacy program is highly desirable. Demonstrated experience in using a range of strategies to support students to develop appropriate behaviours in the classroom & community is essential. More than one position available.
