Position Information

Callaghan College Waratah Campus is a dynamic Years 7–10 comprehensive secondary school within Callaghan College, a multi-campus structure that provides one of the most extensive curriculum pathways in the Hunter.

The campus has an enrolment of approximately 847 students, including nine Special Education classes, and is a proudly inclusive learning community. Twenty-nine per cent of students are from a non-English-speaking background and 16 per cent identify as Aboriginal. Staff maintain high expectations for all learners and are committed to evidence-informed practice and continuous improvement.

Waratah Campus maintains strong partnerships across the Callaghan network, including the Callaghan Education Pathways (16 partner primary schools), the Callaghan Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (LAECG) and an active Callaghan College P&C. The school also has an established academic partnership with the University of Newcastle and works with a range of industry partners to broaden student learning opportunities and pathways.

Students at Waratah Campus experience success across academic, cultural and sporting domains, including State-level representation in Chess and Debating, and regular participation at Regional and State sporting levels. Comprehensive wellbeing systems provide proactive and individualised support to strengthen engagement, wellbeing and learning in Stages 4 and 5.

Selection Criteria

Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria
Approval to teach Mathematics (7-12) with demonstrated capacity to lead staff in the development of teaching and learning programs and assessment practices.
Demonstrated capacity to lead the implementation and coordination of whole-school numeracy initiatives, utilising evidence-informed and data-driven practices to improve student growth and achievement.
Proven ability to collaborate strategically to lead, manage and evaluate initiatives aligned to the School Excellence Plan, strengthening whole-school coherence, student engagement and improved learning outcomes for all students.
Demonstrated instructional leadership in mentoring and developing staff to design and deliver high-quality, differentiated teaching and learning programs, embedding High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE), Explicit Teaching and trauma-informed practices to ensure every student learns, grows and belongs.

General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
