Position Information

The NSW Department of Education provides, funds and regulates education services for NSW students from early childhood to secondary school, delivering world-class education through its public schools and providing funding support to non-government schools. We employ, develop and support teachers, leaders and other staff to deliver the best outcomes for students and to advance the wellbeing of Aboriginal people. 

 
About the Role 

School Learning Support Officers provides support for students with identified diverse learning needs including disability in classrooms and other learning environments under the direction and supervision of a teacher to support the achievement of educational outcomes. This support includes student welfare, health and wellbeing activities as required.  In addition School Learning Support Officers may provide specific support for students in the following streams or settings: pre-school, vision support, hearing support, and bilingual. Student Learning Support Officers working in these streams/settings have specific additional duties, in addition to the general duties for School Learning Support Officers that are required to be performed.

 
Essential Requirements
  • Working with Children Check Clearance
  • Completion of mandatory training required by the Department of Education and a willingness to undertake first aid training relevant to the School Learning Support Officer role.
  • Administration of Medications – training to be provided based on student needs.
  • Health support training to be provided based on student needs (subject to transition provisions).


Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  2. Ability to work with students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
  3. Awareness of the needs of students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
  4. Effective communication skills.

Morisset High School, with a FOEI of 124, is located in the beautiful south-western Lake Macquarie and is a proud comprehensive public school that caters for over 700 Year 7-12 students. Approximately 26% of students identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, who are well supported by the Itji-Marru Aboriginal Resource Centre. School-based VET options are available to students from Year 10, and students in Yeas 11 and 12 can undertake School-based Apprenticeship (SBAT) while still achieving a HSC. VET courses currently offered include; Entertainment, Primary Industries (Agriculture), Retail, Business Services, Sports Coaching, Hospitality (Kitchen Operations/Food and Beverages), Construction Pathways, Manufacturing and Engineering, Financial Services and Hairdressing. There are eleven inclusive Special Education Support classes catering for students with additional learning needs, uniquely named Malangba meaning 'Together Place' in language. The school has a unique learning partnership with Big Picture Education Australia and has five Big Picture Advisories in the Morisset High School Big Picture Academy. This provides students with an alternative, personalised and student-driven learning opportunity and environment.  Students strive to achieve an International Big Picture Learning Credential.
