Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, Thursday Island

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School is located in the beautiful Torres Straits with two campuses on Thursday Island and Hammond Island.  Our Thursday Island Campus caters for Prep to Year 6, while our Hammond Island campus is for Prep to Year 2 with older students catching a daily ferry to the TI campus. We celebrate our remote location and Indigenous culture. The faith, life and values of the people of the Torres Strait are acknowledged through our learning environment.

About the Role

The role and responsibilities of the Indigenous Liaison Officer (ILO) is primarily one of communication and liaison between diocesan schools, Catholic Education Services and local Indigenous people, communities, and agencies to increase student engagement and outcomes for Indigenous students. The position has a strong cultural focus that extends to advice and action on broad issues, including the enrichment of cultural awareness within the schools. ILOs develop, promote, and maintain communication networks between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, the parents or guardians, the community and the school. ILOs play a key role in providing knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, languages, and cultures within schools.
