Teaching in Australia as an Overseas Teacher
Contents

Australia has a growing shortage of qualified teachers, particularly in STEM subjects, Special Education, and regional areas. For overseas-trained teachers, this creates genuine opportunity — but the path to the classroom involves several steps: the right visa, AITSL qualification recognition, and state teacher registration.

This guide walks through the full process end-to-end. Most overseas teachers can complete the process in 4–12 months for a total out-of-pocket cost of $3,000–$8,000 AUD (excluding visa costs paid by the employer where sponsorship applies).

Accompanying detailed guides: Teacher Visa Australia (teacherpassport.com.au/guides/teacher-visa-australia) and AITSL Overseas Recognition (teacherpassport.com.au/guides/aitsl-overseas-recognition).

Can I teach in Australia?

Most overseas-trained teachers can teach in Australia, provided they meet three baseline requirements:

1

Qualified teacher

A teaching qualification broadly equivalent to an Australian four-year degree. Qualifications from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ, South Africa, Ireland, and most of Europe are generally accepted.

2

English proficiency

If your qualification was completed in a language other than English, you need to demonstrate English proficiency via IELTS, PTE Academic, or OET. Native English speakers are usually exempt.

3

Working rights in Australia

You need a visa that permits professional employment — a 482 TSS, 189/190/491 skilled migration visa, or the NZ 444 Special Category Visa. A working holiday visa (417/462) does not qualify.

Each state also requires Working with Children / Working with Vulnerable People checks — arranged once you're in Australia with a job offer.

Overseas qualification recognition

Most overseas-trained teachers need AITSL assessment before applying for state registration. AITSL compares your qualification against the Australian Graduate Standards and issues a letter of recognition.
